In a Replenish workshop recently a teacher shared that they had resisted engaging with the content because they were focused on the big problems and crisis in the world. She made reference to the immigrant crisis that has had a tremendous impact on Denver schools and to the war in the Gaza. Certainly these are two giant and heart breaking issues. And this teacher cares tremendously about kids and people everywhere. What struck me was that she had made up somewhere along the way that she couldn’t be well until others were also well. In fact, our individual wellbeing is generative. It’s from our own sense of safety, security, connection to goodness and possibility that we fully step into our power to impact and transform local and global outcomes. We need well leaders. We need well teachers. In our lifetimes and in our history books it’s easy to spot when a global crisis was met by an angry, disregulated, fearful response. It wasn’t peace and freedom that followed, it was punishment and control. It’s time to figure out how to lead from peace, clarity, and inspiration. We’ve tried it the other way and the result is burnout and disillusionment. Just the other day a dear friend who is a principal texted me all the principal vacancies in her district. It was a lot! The Compassionate Cohort will be having our next meeting this THURSDAY (September 19) at 1pm ET on Zoom! If you are a former professor who has recently left your academic position and you are seeking community in the midst of your career pivot, feel free to join us! The intention behind Compassionate Cohort is to create a supportive and judgment-free online gathering space for former (and current) academics who are navigating the logistics and the emotional landscape of leaving academia. Here's what you can expect: -An hourly virtual meeting based on the values of compassion and support (and safe space) for current or former academics -A place to come virtually via Zoom and network/connect with others (connections can be career support or just sharing where you are in your journey) -Bi monthly meetings to share ideas and lend support to others on recovery and post academic challenges -A space to hear others' stories and share your own -A private LinkedIn page to connect with others -A google contact sheet list of members to network with (some CC members have met in person or virtually!) -All free and open door (come and go as you please) -No membership needed (no dues, etc) This free peer-support group is facilitated by Dr Jodie N. Mader, Ph.D. and Dr. Katherine Lee, two former tenured professors who have pivoted into proposal writing/analysis and coaching. Both of us have experienced the power of being able to share our stories, challenges, and wins with one another during the past 2 years. (Jodie left over 3 years ago, and I left last year) We’ve also noticed that the decision to pivot out–after spending more than a decade as professors–often entails the loss of one’s former academic community. For all my friends and working on flourishing in the education space check out this great work from Kimberly Schonert-Reichl connecting teacher and student well-being. When I used to work in the education space, I often encouraged senior leadership teams to consider teachers first and students second - teachers are caregivers first and they want to help the students before they help themselves. 3 Reasons Why Nonprofit Leaders Burn Out: Nonprofit leaders burn out because they’re often driven by passion but lack the boundaries and support to sustain it. Here’s 3 reasons why leaders burn out: 1. Overworking to Prove Commitment Nonprofit leaders often take on too much to show dedication. It’s easy to feel that every task is mission-critical and that you’re the only one who can handle it. This leads to overworking, exhausting your energy reserves and leaving little room to recharge. Try setting specific, non-negotiable hours for work and sticking to them. Share your limits with your team, so they know when to step in. Boundaries protect your energy and allow you to work more sustainably. 2. Neglecting Personal Well-being Self-care can feel like a luxury when others are depending on you. Running on empty only reduces your effectiveness and resilience. Make self-care a non-negotiable priority, whether that means getting enough sleep, exercising, or just taking short breaks. This isn’t indulgence. It’s maintenance for your mental and physical stamina. You can’t lead effectively if you don’t take care of yourself first. 3. Underestimating the Importance of Delegation Many leaders feel they must handle every detail themselves. This belief is a fast track to burnout. By not delegating, you not only overload yourself, but you also miss out on empowering your team. Trust your team’s skills, assign tasks that match their strengths, and you’ll create a stronger, more resilient organization. Delegation isn’t just practical; it’s essential for lasting impact. Remember: Leadership isn’t about carrying every burden alone. It’s about guiding your team and taking care of yourself along the way.

It’s critical that we engage not only our peers, but our family, friends and neighbors in conversations about #AIliteracy. A simple but profound way to do that is to consider the role of the algorithm in our personal lives.
